5 Time Management Tips to Beat Holiday Stress in Your Home Business

Time management can be a challenge for those of us running a home based business anyway. When you add holiday stress to the mix, it can be a killer!

For some of you, the holidays mean a chance to take a break from your home business and enjoy a little “you” time with friends and family. For others, this time of year is your busiest, with extra orders to fill and you don’t know how in the world you’re going to fit it all in.

Here are some time management tips to help you get the most out of your holidays and beat the blues holiday stress can bring.

Time Management Tip #1: Make a List

How many times do you look back over a weekend, or a few days off from work and wonder what the heck you did with your time?

The best way to keep yourself on track is to list out the things you want to accomplish. You can start out with a master list for things to be done over the next month or so, and then break it down to weekly and daily tasks.

Be realistic about what you can do. If you overburden yourself, just looking at the list will add to your holiday stress!

This will not only help keep you focused, but when you have checked off the items on your list for a given day, it will allow you to completely relax and enjoy your “down” time.

Time Management Tip #2: Play Time Increases Productivity

A mental break from your home business tasks is actually a good practice for time management because it helps to make you more efficient.

Give yourself permission to put business out of your mind while you do other things you enjoy. Be sure those things you really love doing are on your list!

When your spirit has been renewed by the time with family or engaging in something for the pure fun of it, you will find you are able to get more work done because your mind and body have been re-energized.

Time Management Tip #3: Build a Two in One Support System

One of the things that can add to your holiday stress is not being able to share your excitement about the things you are doing in your home business.

While family and friends love you, they don’t necessarily share your passion for lead conversions, SEO, or new recruits.

It can really help to develop a connection with someone who is on the same page as you are. If that person doesn’t happen to be amongst your friends and family, then look to your networking friends.

It may be someone on your network marketing team, a fellow business owner, or maybe it’s someone you interact with at a social networking site. Arrange to “meet” with that person or persons on a regular basis so that you can share ideas and support each other.

In terms of time management, this interaction with fellow entrepreneurs serves the dual purpose of an emotional outlet (which reduces holiday stress) and networking for the sake of your home business.

If this idea sounds familiar, it’s because it is an offshoot of the Master Mind idea. But for this purpose, be sure that your master mind partners support one another on the emotional level as well as offering practical help and advice. Having people who meet your emotional needs as it applies to your home business triumphs, frustrations, and challenges is an enormous stress reliever.

Time Management Tip #4: Work for Short, Focused Periods

Instead of working for six hour stretches; limit yourself to sessions of no more than two hours at a time. Those two hours need to be absolutely free of distractions – no television, no instant messages, no phone calls, no nothing!

Your mind is able to immerse itself completely for two hours. If you go longer than that, your body begins to tire, and you lose your mental focus.

After the two hours, take a break and do something completely unrelated – no fair checking emails! Instead, take a walk, play a video game, visit with your family.

By the way, it will be much easier for your family when you set a time limit on when you are not available. If you say “I’m going up to my office for two hours and then I’ll be ready to watch the football game with everyone,” your family will tend to leave you alone during the two hours.

They know they will have your full attention once you’ve done what you need to do. If you simply disappear for hours on end, you are likely to make them feel they aren’t important to you and your holiday stress is made worse by hurt feelings.

Time Management Tip #5: Choose Your Tasks for Maximum Efficiency

Let’s take social marketing, as an example.

Building relationships at social marketing sites is a great way to drive traffic to your website and to cultivate future customers or team members.

But it’s very easy to spend an hour or more surfing around, reading other people’s posts, or socializing with no real purpose.

Before you go on a social site, define your purpose and your time frame.

Spend fifteen minutes at Digg to support the work of other networkers. Go through your “shouts” (articles your Digg friends have asked you to support) and comment on them. Remember, your comments become a part of your content and a way people can find you. You have done two things here – you have established yourself as an unselfish marketer by supporting others AND you have made yourself more visible by leaving the comment – which of course, is something of substance not simply “great article.”

Fifteen minutes at BetterNetworker to make new contacts. Here, you are looking for people who share your interests or who may be more experienced in a given area than you are. Ask questions, post on a forum to answer someone else’s questions, leave comments on someone’s guest book.

Since BetterNetworker offers a lot of free training, you may set your task as a study session rather than for contact seeking. That’s okay too, but if you are watching a video that turns out not to address an immediate need for you, don’t feel obligated to watch the whole thing. The old adage of “finishing what you start” does not apply here! Instead, move on so that your time is spent only on those things which provide value for what you need right now.

The point is by deciding the purpose for going to the social site before you actually go, you will avoid wasting time by aimlessly wandering about with no clear reason for doing so.

Pre-Planning Will Reduce Your Holiday Stress

By anticipating the things which are likely to add to your stress level, you can avoid or at least diminish their impact.

Planning ahead allows you to make the best use of your time and frees you up to really enjoy your holidays.

Wishing you and yours the healthiest, happiest, and most prosperous season yet!

Robert Kiyosaki: Rich Dad Poor Dad and Me

Robert Kiyosaki and Me October 26, 2008Attending my first Robert Kiyosaki seminar was an eye opener in many ways.  Kiyosaki, who wrote the best selling book, Rich Dad Poor Dad, has become a world reknowned leader in the area of financial education.

But for me, the weekend took a surprising turn.

    Becoming an Active Learner

One thing I have learned when attending any seminar is to get up to the microphone and contribute in some way at the very beginning.  Two things happen when you do this.

First, you set the tone for your own experience and what you will get out of the seminar.  By contributing to the discussion early on in a public way, you put yourself in the mindset to be an active learner.  When you are actively engaged in the process, you will internalize your learning much more effectively than just sitting back and listening to what is going on around you.

Secondly, you introduce yourself to the entire room at once.  At these events, you will find that you wind up meeting the very people who are most likely to begin a mutually beneficial relationship.

The first person I met while standing in line to go in to the seminar was a personal development specialist which is very much in tune with the work I am doing in helping people build customer relationships.  We were meant to meet.

But when you get up to the microphone, you make yourself easier for those who need you to find you.

What Can You Share with Robert Kiyosaki?

My contribution at the microphone was not earth shattering, but it was on topic.  Robert Kiyosaki simply asked that we share what had brought us to the seminar and what we hoped to get out of it.  I told the story of my fourteen year old nephew, how Robert was his idol and the impression that had made on me. That, coupled with my own lack of financial education beyond balancing my checkbook was what had brought me to the seminar.

You don't have to wait until you can offer a brilliant insight before you participate at these things.  You do want to be sure you are directly on topic, however.  It would have been inappropriate for me to give a sales pitch about my business or to go into a long spiel about some other investment scheme. Short, sweet, and to the point will get the job done.

In this particular setting, on the subject of investments, economics and making financial predictions, I did not meet anyone who was less informed than I was.  In other words, I was the absolute, hands down ROOKIE in the room.

If you find yourself in a similar situation, it's okay to listen and soak in the information.  Ask questions. People don't mind answering your questions because it helps them solidify their own learning.  So don't be shy about asking someone to clarify a point you didn't quite get.

The point is not to allow your position as a relative newcomer to limit your idea of what you can accomplish. This is true for every aspect of your business.  If there is something you don't know, the fact that you are seeking out the information you need is part of what makes you a legitimate entrepreneur.

An entrepreneur knows how to find people who know more than they do and get whatever facts, figures, experience, and resources they need to move forward.

The Smallest Things Can Have the Biggest Impact

Here was the unexpected surprise I got out of that one little trip to the microphone.

Robert Kiyosaki had made arrangements for his image consultant, Antoni Patrik to choose five people and create an outer image to match their business offerings.

One of Robert's business associates was going to be introducing him at an event the next week. Because he is so close to Kiyosaki, he was having difficulty coming up with what he wanted to say.  My story about my nephew gave him the material he needed.  We talked about it over lunch.

That conversation caused him to grab Antoni and point me out to him.  Meanwhile, seated next to me at lunch were the two people in charge of choosing the makeover participants' wardrobes. Antoni came over to speak with them, then turned to me and offered me the chance for the makeover.

Robert Kiyosaki doesn't give this stuff away.  He just makes it possible.  He believes if you give something to someone without teaching, your good intention will be wasted.  If, however, you show them how they can make something happen for themselves, you have really helped them.

The rules were: you pay for the clothes, you get the $1000 consultation session for free, along with hair and makeup.  He did request Antoni be tipped for his time and effort. You were NOT allowed to ask questions. You were NOT allowed to have input on what would be done.

    Why an Image Consultant?

The last day, they put up our before photos.  The attendees then guessed what they thought each of us did for a living and how much money they thought we made.  I was told later that they had guessed I was a realtor - not bad since it was a room full of real estate investors.  Still, while they thought I looked "sweet" and would be happy to do a small deal with me, they didn't feel I looked as if I could pull off a major deal.

When the "new" me was revealed, the change was amazing.  Not just in my looks, but in the way I carried myself. Robert asked what kind of an income or deal I could work now and someone in the back said, "Anything she wants!"

When I got up to the microphone that first day, my knees were knocking together.  Who was I to get up and speak in front of Robert Kiyosaki?  I did it because I knew it was important.

That last day, I wasn't just at the microphone.  The other makeover participants and I were up on the stage.  And we were given command of the room.

Most surprising was that after studying such serious issues like our current economy and what has led up to today's financial crisis, something as seemingly trivial as a change of hairstyle and clothes should have such a dramatic impact on the people in the room.

The other four makeover recipients and I realized other people were drawing on the power and confidence we were feeling.  People were coming up to us and thanking us for setting an example. People clamoured for our business cards, to be photographed with us, to meet us and learn from us.  It was mind boggling.

Customer Relationships and Your Client's Point of View

I teach my clients that the most important aspect of building customer relationships is to always frame the process around the customer's perceptions of reality. Everything must revolve around the way the customer sees your product, your business opportunity, your leadership.  That is your first and last point of interest.

The change in outer appearance, and the more subtle inward changes that came along with it made a dramatic shift in the way my prospects perceived me.  They still saw me as being "sweet."  Suddenly, they also saw me as being capable and powerful as well.  A good combination. Honest, trustworthy, good hearted and still strong enough to get the job done.

One more lesson on top of a weekend loaded with  challenging and interesting concepts.

Robert Kiyosaki and The Law of Attraction

Robert Kiyosaki, author of the Rich Dad Poor Dad series, and financial education advocate gave an interview with Mike Dillard last night.

Mike Dillard, for those of you who don't know, is one of the key people in our network marketing industry due to his groundbreaking book, Magnetic Sponsoring.  A quote from a recent newsletter of his explains how he has put Kiyosaki's teachings into practice by building his own empire - and building it out; not relying on a single company.

"I’ve been able to produce a multiple six-figure income from my primary opportunity, and a multiple 7-figure income by serving the 95% who said “no” to it…"

During the interview, Robert Kiyosaki was calling all of us to action. If we don't take charge of our own financial futures, NOW, and stop depending on our politicians, bosses, or anyone else to fix things for us, we are going to be in serious trouble.

It was a powerful interview and if you missed it, go to BetterNetworker.com and look for information about the call.

This article is about how Robert Kiyosaki and The Law of Attraction have been at work in my life and business. My purpose in writing about this is to tell you that YOU have the power to do literally anything you set your mind to.

This past August, I was in Los Angeles visiting with family.  I found Robert Kiyosaki's book, co-authored with Donald Trump, Why We Want You to be Rich on my nephew's bookshelf. Since I hadn't read it yet, I spent the afternoon devouring the vital messages the book contained.

I thought a lot of Robert Kiyosaki before, but somehow this book sent me over the edge. It helped clarify an even bigger picture of what I want to accomplish in my business in terms of creating programs that will eventually be available for young people to help them take control of their own financial futures.

That same week, I finally got to see "The Secret."  The Secret teachesThe Law of Attraction which states that you can achieve anything you want, by declaring your intent to have it.  Sounds a bit mystical, I know.

The way I think of it is this; when you make clear to yourself what a certain goal is, you will then heighten your own awareness of the opportunities and methods that will lead you to the goal.

You can't wish for a million dollars and expect it to fall into your lap.  But if making a million dollars is your specific intent; you will begin to see the actions you can take to create that income.

So, I told my nephew, Darren, who is a huge Kiyosaki fan, that we were going to put the Law of Attraction to the test. I declared to him out loud that within the next two months, I would meet Robert Kiyosaki.

I didn't know how, when or where, but I knew I could make it happen.

The next day I flew to Austin to attend Mike Dillard's houseboat party. I had never met Mike. I was invited to the party because I had signed up through him for Eben Pagen's Guru Mastermind program. The party was a way for fellow masterminders to get to know each other.  Thanks, Mike!

I told Mike Dillard of my intention to meet Robert Kiyosaki and he grinned at me and basically said, "good luck!"  It turns out that he and his team had been working for months to arrange an interview with Kiyosaki.

To make a long story short, Dillard pulled off the interview last night.  Because I had gone to the houseboat party, I had made it a point to make better use of my time over at his social site, Betternetworker.  I got the word that he had managed to get the Robert Kiyosaki interview and dropped everything to get on that call.

Robert Kiyosaki is holding a seminar at the end of the month in Scottsdale, Arizona.  It's pricey, but not nearly as expensive as it could be.  However, Mike Dillard had arranged for a discounted price for a few of the people on that call.  It made the difference of being able to come up with the money or not for me.

Truth be told, I would have found a way no matter how much it cost because I feel down to my core that Robert Kiyosaki's message is that important not only for the well being of myself and my family, but for all the people that I work with.

But the invitation wasn't just to attend the seminar.  It was to "hang out" with Mike Dillard and Robert Kiyosaki.  My fingers were hovering over the computer keys waiting for Mike to give the link to sign up, even before I had any idea what I would have to pay.  I'm bound to have been one of the first people to lock in my place.

When I got off the phone, I looked at my calendar.  From the day I made my declaration that within two months I would find a way to meet Robert Kiyosaki to the day I will be shaking his hand, was one month and three weeks!

The series of events that led to this opportunity were put into motion the day after I had made the declaration.

Now, I don't care how you want to describe these events. Was God looking out for me? The power of the Universe? Plain good luck? However you choose to look at it, what you need to GET out of it is this:

You and only you hold the key to your own destiny.

And that key can open any door you want it to.

You just have to set your mind that once the door is open, you'll walk through.

If you want to learn more about how I am building MY business empire, come see me at Renegade University and give the free membership a try.  I will personally walk you through the system and show you how to start taking control of your financial destiny and get your business going and growing.

Cold Calling Survey and eBook Creation

Romancing the Sale is about ready to launch to the pilot group within the next few days.  It will be ready for the public launch next month.

Meanwhile, I am collecting information specifically on cold calling in order to address those specific needs for my clients and customers.  The survey is only ten questions long and I would REALLY appreciate your input.  Click on "Take the Survey" and submit your answers.  Your information, as always, will be kept confidential and will not be shared, sold, or used to spam you in any way.

Click here to Take the Survey!

Just for your information, I created this survey using iContact.  It was extremely easy to set up even though I had to hunt around a little to find the URL to send you to!

As far as Romancing the Sale goes, the adventure continues.  When I first started, I was just going to write an eBook.  But as I moved along, I discovered there was a lot more to it than I anticipated.

    1. I interviewed people on their needs, frustrations, challenges to give the book direction.

    2. I did a video of "the customer on the street" for promotional purposes.

    3. Wrote the book and developed concept for illustrations.

    4. Wrote the Sales letter.

    5. Still adding the illustrations into the book as they come in - about 10 to go.

    6. Wrote the pages for my SBI site outlining other services provided.

    7. Did interviews with "gurus" as a bonus audio - still to be edited

    8. Set up my corporation and business account through them

    9. Have to set up merchant account when business info comes through

    10. Looking into affiliate hosting.

    11. Created eBook cover

    12. gathering testimonials

    13. having legal disclaimer written up

    14. finished file will be uploaded to PDF

    15. will record the book on audio

    16. arranging for an exclusive audio for my audience only on relaxation techniques

    17. set up the shopping cart

    18. create PPC ads

    19. promotional videos

    20. create trainings on webinar covering the Consultative Approach and more

I'm sure I'll discover other things I have to do as I move forward -- this is a learning process for me - the technical side that is.  Writing the book was the easy part!

Once this is all done, I'll know how and it will be much easier for the next project.  As I tell my clients, just take it one step at a time - some will be baby steps and others giant leaps, but either way you are moving forward!

Thanks in advance to those of you who fill out the survey!

Blog or SBI: Which is Best for Your Network Marketing Strategy?

Whether to concentrate on creating a blog, like this one here at Squarespace or build a full-blown website with a service like SBI (SiteBuildIt) is a question I'm hearing a lot from my clients.  Which is the better platform for your network marketing strategy?

The best strategy, as always, is the one that works for you.  There are advantages to both an SBI site and a blog. I have both and I use them in slightly different ways. There are, of course, other blog platforms and other web hosting platforms, beyond these two, but since these are the two I use, I will stick to discussing what I know best.

I am affiliated with both these sites. I join the affiliate program of anything I use and like well enough to confidently promote, assuming such a program is available. This is part of the monetization process you hear about.  I'd rather earn money from those programs I know are good, than to affiliate with something I know little or nothing about.

    Blogs

A blog has several advantages, especially for a beginning internet marketer.

It's a little less intimidating to set up than a site with SBI.  The learning curve simply isn't as steep, especially with the help of the tutorials at Renegade University - soon to be updated to include the new features recently added by Squarespace.

Here at Squarespace, I like the way the tracking features are set up. Even as a newbie, I was able to access and understand where my traffic was coming from, which articles were the most popular, and what keywords were used to find me.  Seeing the information presented both as numbers and in graph form helped me make sense of things and better optimize the site.

The overview is all on one page so I can see general information and then search for details if I want.

The blog is relatively inexpensive.  A small monthly fee and you're good to go.  You can try the system out and see how well it works for you over a period of several months without fronting a big expenditure.

I was already seeing traffic results within five weeks of starting my blog.  It took three months with my SBI site and it can take up to twelve months to build significant traffic on SBI.

    SBI

My SiteBuildIt website has the capability of growing with my business.  Even though it costs more annually, there are so many built in features, the investment is very reasonable.

As a total novice when I built my first site with SBI, it took about six weeks for me to get the first thirty pages up and running.

    The time was well spent.

    SiteBuildIt Tools

First, I used the tools which helped me identify and then narrow my niche by showing me the numbers, need and monetization possibilities for possible niche variations: ie should you go for network marketers or internet marketers as your niche?  Should you do a travel site about one island or a chain of islands?

Once the niche is chosen, the system generates everything you could possibly want to know about the best keywords to use for that niche.  Statistics on how many people search for a given keyword, how many sites already exist for that word, the top sites using that word, variations on the keyword or phrase, and more.

By the time I was ready to pick a domain name, I had been thoroughly coached on what the site would be about, how it would be set up, and the long term vision for monetizing it.

When creating a new article for my SBI site, the page analysis tool checks to see that I have placed the main keywords properly.  It looks to see that the keyword appears in certain areas like the title and headlines. It  checks to see that you haven't used the keyword too often (known as keyword stuffing) which can cause the search engines to penalize you. It also checks to see that the keyword appears often enough - otherwise the search engine spiders would not be able to identify what the page is about and you would not get your article indexed correctly .

Using keywords can be kind of tricky, and to have access to this instant analysis helped me to develop a feel for proper placement which saves me lots of time now.

Recently, I moved some pages around on my blog, and that messed up some links I had on my SBI site where I keep an index of all my articles.  An email was sent directly to me notifying me of these broken links.  (It's on my to-do list!)

In addition, SBI has webmail, autoresponder capabilities, research tools, limitless pages, forums, built in forms, and a lot more.  One estimation I got was that to purchase all the features included in your SBI package individually would cost about $5000.

I have yet to use all the resources available to me at SBI, but I know they are there waiting as my needs expand along with my business.

Marketing on My Blog and on SBI

I use my blog as a less formal way to market my business.  This is my personal choice, but it helps me in choosing where to post a given article by giving the blog and the website their own "personalities."  The blog is a place to write about the personal aspects of my business.

If you are wanting to know more about me as a person, Home Business Diary is the place to go.  Here, I give my own opinion, good and bad about the way things are going in my business.  People are more likely to leave comments here and that creates a dialogue which adds to the overall experience and allows them to get to know me better.

As I work with clients, and become aware of the need for "how-to" articles, they go on my SBI site, How to Market Guide.  I think of it as more of the nuts and bolts side of the business.

I won't be posting about Mike Dillard's Houseboat party there - but as soon as I am able to download the photos, it will be a blog report.

The steps I've gone through in creating an eBook, however, will go up at the SBI site.

The Blog or SBI: Which One Should You Build First?

I built my first SBI site before I did anything else.  Like I said, it took me about six weeks to read all the materials and instructions and then apply them.  It was like an intensive course in search engine optimization.

By the time I built my second SBI site, it took only a matter of a few days.

In an ideal world, I would recommend creating a blog, which is easy to set up and maintain, and then work a little bit each day until you got your SBI site up.

Since the SBI site takes longer to build the traffic numbers, you want to get it going as soon as possible so that it can begin attracting prospects to your business.  By the time your SBI site kicks in and is generating serious traffic, you should be ready to take your business to the next level and put some of those SBI tools to good use.

Meanwhile, you can get the more immediate benefit of your blog traffic.

If you are not the type of person who can easily divide their focus between creating a blog and a website at the same time, then choose one and concentrate on that until you have a strong foundation built.  Once you have a good thirty or so articles posted, you can turn your attention to the other platform.

Do You Need Both a Blog and an SBI Site?

In a word, no.  You don't have to have either one, for that matter.  You can establish a presence on the web through social networking sites, ezine articles, Squidoo, BetterNetworker, Hubpages and so on.

Still I recommend one or the other in order to have a central location to point all those other articles to.  To have a "one stop shopping" resource is very helpful for your readers.

That way, when someone discovers you through an individual article out in cyberspace, they can come to your central site and find many more articles on the topics of their choice. Now they have the opportunity to find out what you have to offer and whether it is a good fit for their needs.

I have both the blog and the website because they give me two different ways to approach my readers. The Squarespace blog is the place to interact and share opinions.  The SBI site is a teaching platform, resource center, with how-to info and reviews on marketing tools, books and coaches.

Each has its purpose.  Each has its personality.
